Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute, Mikocheni Center (TARI Mikocheni) comes up with a strategy to revive and develop the coconut industry in the country.

The strategy for reviving and developing the coconut crop is a priority for the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI). Mikocheni Agricultural Research Center (TARI Mikocheni) has been tasked with overseeing the development of coconut crops in the country. On that basis, efforts are being made to achieve the goals of the Institute and the government in general to ensure that the cultivation of coconut crop uplifts the farmer and contributes to GDP. Director General of the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute Dr. Geofrey Mkamilo accompanied by the Manager of the Mikocheni Agricultural Research Center Dr. Joseph Ndunguru arrived at Mkuranga district in Pwani region and Mtama district in Mtwara region to raise awareness about coconut cultivation and also to distribute the coconut seedlings (East African Tall) researched by TARI. The handing over and planting of the coconut seedlings in general took place in the districts of Mkuranga – Coast region where 250 coconut seedlings were distributed, Mtama district – Mtwara region where 300 coconut seedlings were distributed and Same district – Kilimanjaro region where 100 coconut seedlings were distributed thus making a total of 650 coconut seedlings distributed in all three districts. Coconut is very important crop as it can produce well contributing to the GDP. Coconut crop is also resistant to pests (Beetle and Coreid bug) and diseases (Lethal disease).
