Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute – Mikocheni center (TARI – Mikocheni) were visited by Ambassador, Amina Salum Alli who came to interact with TARI – Mikocheni researchers on strategies to revive coconut research and development. She noted that, coconut can contribute to our national economy especially when an increased coconut production can produce enough nuts for local consumption as well as for industrial purpose. During discussion ambassador said that She visited Indonesia and Sri Lanka and observed coconut based industries and a wide range of high value products and byproducts being manufactured. For instance, one of the country wanted to import large consignment of fresh nuts from Zanzibar unsuccessfully. TARI – Mikocheni explained to her on the status of the crop since National Coconut Development Programme (NCDP) phased out and the potential of the crop in rising the standard of life of clients. Fortunately, 25 years report on NCDP and a proposal on the verge of being submitted were with us and She was handed their copies as a vivid example of efforts to revive coconut research and development.
