Strategizing for Enhancing Uptake of Innovations Among Sugarcane Farmers in Tanzania: TARI Kibaha Participates in the World Food Day 2024 Exhibitions in Wete, Pemba.

Event Date: 01-01-1970

Venue:

World Food Day, observed annually on October 16, focuses on promoting awareness about proper nutrition and the universal right to food. The 2024 theme, “The Right to Food for a Better Present and Future,” emphasized addressing global hunger by reducing food wastage to ensure equitable access for all. To mark the occasion, the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar organized an exhibition from October 7 to 16, 2024, at Chamanangwe Grounds in Wete District, Pemba. The event was officially opened on October 10, 2024, by the Second Vice President of Zanzibar, Hon. Hemed Suleiman Abdulla.

The Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) participated through its centers: Naliendele, Kibaha, Ilonga, Ifakara, and Dakawa, following an invitation from the Zanzibar Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, Natural Resources, and Livestock, Hon. Shamata SH Khamis.

During the exhibition, TARI Kibaha showcased advanced agricultural technologies designed to:
  • Boost food production, particularly sugarcane, and roots and tuber crops.
  • Promote value addition to agricultural products.
  • Enhance employment and income for farmers and the public in general.
  • Strengthen the national economy.

TARI Kibaha participation aimed to achieve the following specific objectives:

  1. Raise awareness about improved sugarcane variety and best farming practices.
  2. Educate on value addition and processing of sugarcane to obtain molasses, sugar and so forth.
  3. Disseminate knowledge on food safety and nutrition.
  4. Foster collaboration with stakeholders in the agricultural sector between Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar.

The event provided a platform to educate communities and inspire collective efforts to ensure universal access to food, fostering equality and sustainability for current and future generations.
