Government Recognizes the Contribution of Research Scientists

Five Researchers from Tanzania
Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) received awards for their outstanding
contribution to national food security through research and the release of
varieties that have improved crop production and productivity in the country.
The awards were presented during the inauguration of the International Agricultural Show (Nanenane)- 2023 at John
Mwakangale Grounds in Mbeya where the Vice President of the United Republic of
Tanzania Honorable Dr. Philip Isdor Mpango was the guest of Honour and among
other issued prizes to the five Researchers.
Speaking during the Nanenane inauguration
ceremony Minister of Agriculture Hon. Hussein Bashe (MP) mentioned the
Researchers to be Dr. Zubenda Nduruma (retired) who was a maize breeder at TARI
Selian, whereby during her service, she bred and released a maize variety known
as STUKA M1 which is now being widely used by farmers in low and mid-altitude maize growing areas of the country.
Another scientist in the list
of awardees was Ms Clesensia Lutawa (deceased), who worked at TARI Ilonga in
Morogoro where she bred and released one sunflower variety known as “Record”
which is the most popular in Tanzania. The prize was received by her children Mr
Eric Mbiza and James Mbiza.
Also, Dr. Zakaria Kanyeka
(retired) and Mr. Maulid Penza Jointly innovated Rice Variety SARO 5 (TXD306) while
working at TARI-Dakawa.
Last but not least, Hon.
Bashe recognized the Contribution of Dr. Atugonza Bilaro for his innovation of
Maize variety T105 during the time when he was working at TARI Tumbi in Tabora.
Dr. Bilaro who is currently
working at TARI Uyole also was awarded for his contribution in the innovation
of various rice varieties and his efforts in assisting junior researchers to
grow their careers.
