TARI KIFYULILO

TARI Kifyulilo is one of the research centre under the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), it is located in Mufindi District in Iringa Region. The main station is situated approximately 60 km from Mafinga town and about 150 km from Iringa Municipality, at an elevation of 2000 meters above sea level. Geographically, the center lies at Latitude 08°42′ S and Longitude 35°20′ E. the center originally established as a tea estate; the facility was acquired in 1986 from a German national with the primary objective of developing a Tea Research Institute. In 1998, its mandate was expanded and redefined to form a multidisciplinary agricultural research institute focusing on beans, round potatoes, and maize, with additional research on wheat and horticultural crops.

The Center operates with two substations: Seatondale, located at Latitude 07°47′23″ S and Longitude 35°41′56″ E at an altitude of 1524 m above sea level, and Ismani, positioned at Latitude 07°55′77″ S and Longitude 35°76′18″ E at 1352 m above sea level within Iringa Municipal and Iringa Rural Districts, respectively. Both substations serve as vital research and agritech hubs that facilitate technology development and dissemination, strategically positioned along the major transport corridors connecting Dodoma to Mbeya and Njombe regions, and Dar es Salaam to Mbeya and Njombe for Seatondale. The Kifyulilo Centre encompasses a total area of 331.2 hectares, offering vast potential for diverse agro-ecological research. It supports studies on food and horticultural crops, as well as innovative research on insects for food and feed, contributing significantly to sustainable agricultural development and food security in Tanzania.
